Pompeii was a ruined city that was covered by 7 metres of volcanic rock in 75AD. When they discovered it they found bodies still in their crouched positions shielding themselves from the ash. You walked amongst the many streets, some with restaurants, bath houses and stadiums, all very well preserved even to the cobbled roads still showing the tracks of the horse and carts.
